The FSM has a rich history. The ancestors from Asia and Polynesia settled
there over 4,000 years ago. European explorers reached Micronesia in the
16th century. The Spanish established sovereignty at the time. In 1899,
Germany bought the interests of Pacific insular area from Spain. In 1914,
Japan began its formal administration under a League of Nations mandate.
After World War II, following the trusteeship under U.S. administration,
the FSM is now independent and self-governing. On September 17th 1991,
the FSM became a member of the United Nations.
The FSM has many unique cultures. Some of them still exist throughout the islands. Nan Madol is an ancient stone city built on 100 artificial islets off the coast of the island of Pohnpei. Yap Island is famous for big stone money. Traditional dance and traditional drink of "sakau" attract travelers.

QSL cards from the FSM |
The FSM is not a rare entity. A lot of DX-peditions or DX-vacations were
made in the past. There are a lot of picture QSL cards here. You will be
able to feel much of Micronesian atmosphere from them. |
